pebble refers to something you hold dear, and Grasshopper出现在70年代李小龙主演的电影<功夫>中, 指"武门徒弟", 是一个humourous的称呼.

Thanks for the first hint :-) Now I understand, it's original from the movie Kung Fu,that wise old monk was basically saying that only when you reach a certain level of skill, will you be able to go out into the world with no fear of failure.
