A question on how to read fast:

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I know that voicing out what I'm reading slows down my reading speed. I don't have this habit, but am not content with my reading speed, or I want to read even faster. So I did some research on this topic on Internet, and here is what I've found --- subvocalization slows down reading speed. By subvocalization, people mean that there is voice in my head when I'm reading materials, although I don't read out through my mouth or my throat does not move at all. I've tried suppressing subvocalization, and it feels weird at beginning --- all of a sudden, my brain can't interpret the words I'm looking at though there is not a single new word. However, after practicing for a month, my brain seems to start working in this silent context and I feel a great improvement in my reading speed. I can read fast, but with low percent of comprehension---maybe 50% of the material. I'm wondering whether someone has experience of suppressing subvocalization. If so, can anyone share some of his/her experience?

There is another extremely fast reading technique --- photo-reading, though I have no clue how to practice this wonderful technique.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

    • 好长一段话啊~~~读太快自然会漏东西,要读仔细自然就慢,分情况啦~~
      • Not really though. It takes brain milliseconds to get the meaning of a picture. Assume that I can figure out the meaning of one word in 1 millisecond, which is a very slow speed, then I should be able to comprehend 1000 words in only 1 second.
Anyway, I need a little bit of extra time on figuring out the meaning of sense groups and then of the whole sentences. I believe I should be able to read at speed of 1000 words per minute with 100% comprehension. But apparently I'm far away from that.
          • You bring about a good point --- new words slow down reading speed --- which is for sure. However, it is possible to read English materials without voicing words in head.
I tried reading without subvocalization, and believe it or not, it works. I can read at a very high speed (a page within one minute) while skipping new words, and what amazes me is that I can still comprehend something, maybe 30% in this case. I think I can comprehend more without sacrificing my reading-speed if I keep practicing this technique.
            • 这就是俺第一句回的,读得快就会漏东西,比如你做阅读理解,如果问题问到细节,必须得回去细度。速读的时候你其实抓的都是关键词,不可能记住细节的。
              • What I'm looking forward to is not a skimming skill, which is already in my bag and I'm quite content with. What I want is to read fast with full comprehension, which I believe is possible.
                Say, I can read 300 words per minute, why can't I get to 400, 500, ...?
                • 因为处理逻辑关系还需要时间的哦。good luck :)
                  • I understand what you're referring to. I can fully comprehend a long complex sentence by reading it only once, no back-and-forth reading. But I'm not happy with my reading speed (300 wpm on average), I'm training myself for a higher speed.
    • Your English is quite good, you might get more help interacting with native speakers than with people who are still struggling like myself.
      • I know. I want to push lots of IDs as much as I can. :-)
    • Speed Reading Test Online, some good advices in it.
      • I tried it, it says 473 wpm, am not happy with this number.
