Question 2. I am not sure if I can nail it, just take whatever suits you.

Five years ago, I wrote an advertisement for a product. After spending hours and hours on choosing right words and brainstorming mind-blowing catchphrases, convinced that there were no grammer errors, I proudly showed it to a retired school teacher in anticipation of some complements. I was taken back in shame by his response. He said:" I know what you mean, but we don't write like this." Paraphrase: You still don't know how to write.
China's grammer-intensive English teaching made us tend to treat grammer as ironclad frame, whereas words as bricks that can be thrown in. If you somehow could "unlearn" this, after reading 100 books, I truly doubt you can find any trace of Chinese in your writing. I know you already know this, unfortunately that is the only way. If there are any other shortcuts that I am not aware of, please share with me.

    • Question 1. Is he motivated? My impression is that he is pretty content with what he has: good job, comfortable with clinical English after 12 years of work, why bother keeping pushing it? He is not obsessed.

I know what you mean, but we don't write like this.”
