解作‘常识’、‘道理’的sense是不可数名词(uncountable noun)。To make sense即‘有道理’或‘可以明白的’，例如：(1)Does his explanation make sense?（他的解释合理吗？）(2) I can't make any sense of this poem（我完全不明白这首诗）。这个sense的反义词就是nonsense（荒谬的说话或想法）。有时，你会看到I tried to make sense out of nonsense这样的句子，意思就是：我尝试从废话之中理出一点道理来。中国有‘老马识途’的故事，马的常识似乎真不错。英文也常以horse sense（马识）来说‘常识’，和common sense同义，例如：Horse sense tells me that it would be suicide to do such a thing （常识告诉我，那样做等于自杀）。
