My English speaking learning experience to share

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Since I posted some messages on this forum, my mailbox has been flooded with private messages, asking me to share some experiences of how I made significant progress in improving my English pronounication and accent. I talked to many friends in English on the phone, such as keny(keny), simmersnake(步履无声), freeslider(freeman), grace2005(一定要开始学英语了), and so on. I was so flattered by keny(keny), complimenting me as Jerry II. I am not that good yet, but a lof of people including locals did say that I sound like locals.

Just to help people believe that speaking Canadian-like English is not a myth. All you need to do is to pick up the ways how Canadians (including Americans) pronounce English words. They do quite differently that we do. For example, words like HORSE, CAR, or even IS, are pronounced differently than what we learned before. What I can say is 99% of Chinese people cannot pronounce CHINA, CANADA exactly the Canadian way. I know a lot of people would not agree with me on that, because they cannot hear the slight differences. So if you really want to make a change, just start from these small differences. OK, that's all my experience that made me quite different in pronounciation and also helped me to speak English fluently a lot.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

    • For the first half, XB! For the second half, just some common sense. No idea what else you wanna say.
      • I am not an ice breaker. Have a good day!
      • To you, it's probably XB. But to many others, it's probably not. Common sense to you doesn't mean common sense to others. Probably you already got it, that's why it's your common sense.
        • my two cents to you (NO OFFENSE)
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Ask yourself why you wrote down this. It sounds to me like you want to share your experience of learning English if I didn’t misunderstand your title line. However, your whole first paragraph has really not even any relation with your English learning experience. IMHO, you are writing this with your Chinese thinking pattern. You just need to throw out your points and support it. That’s quite simple and straight forward.

Just to help people believe that speaking Canadian-like English is not a myth. – Fine. if you want to encourage people.

All you need to do is to pick up the ways how Canadians (including Americans) pronounce English words. – Fine. It’s a good suggestion. However, sentences are the basic units in communication. Pronouncing English words correctly is not enough. You will have to pay more attention on speaking English in English thinking pattern. In addition, correct intonation will help native speakers understand you a lot.

They do quite differently that we do. For example, words like HORSE, CAR, or even IS, are pronounced differently than what we learned before. What I can say is 99% of Chinese people cannot pronounce CHINA, CANADA exactly the Canadian way. – Grrr? Do you know that we used to be taught British English in China? If not, fine. You still didn’t say what the difference is.

I know a lot of people would not agree with me on that, because they cannot hear the slight differences. – It doesn’t matter agree with you on this point or not. The good thing is that you pointed out people cannot hear the slight differences.

So if you really want to make a change, just start from these small differences. – Considering what you mentioned in previous sentence, if people cannot hear or tell those slight differences, how you can assume people can start from these small differences?

OK, that's all my experience that made me quite different in pronounciation and also helped me to speak English fluently a lot. – Good to have a closing sentence.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
          • I was just making some casual statements. I stressed the point that most people are not paying enough attention to pronounciation, so that people can really become aware of it. Of course, sentences are important.
    • I'm following "American Accent Training".Do you know the book and CD set?
      • I borrowed a CD called "Accent Reduction" from library one time. But I returned it the next day, because I was bored with the pronounciation practice word by word. Perhaps your CD is better.
        • i downloaded it yesterday.it includes 1 pdf book and 5 mp3 cds.it's hard for me to pronounce l,n,m,v and so on.
          • Leave me a private message with your contacts. I can give you some help in pronouncing these sounds. It's tough at first, l is probably the hardest one.
            • 舌把舌地教? BB mountain?
            • 我怎么觉得发音还在其次,词不够用才更要紧?怎么样才可以记住更多词?
    • 有没有口音不是最重要的,我们说的再象,正宗老外一听就能听出来我们是“老外”。关键是有些词或词组不是在这里长大的不可能说出来。
      • 正解.
