I am eager to improve my English but I don’t know how. I think one stupid way is to use it everyday, like talking in Rolia but maybe there is no response. Who kindly can tell me if there are any other places (website) for one to practice English?

I read many postings in this forum talking about how important English is for new immigrants, but few people use English. This forum is becoming a place for people to chat and have fun. People contributing to this forum are laughed at by some native speakers or experts in English, people who are poor at English are teased. Maybe key players of this forum are already expert in English, they just need a place to loosen their nerves, to remind them they still can read and write in Chinese. Visitors of this forum are from a very wide range, some of them have lived abroad more than 10 years, and many are still in China trying to catch up, like me. So probably this is not a place to practice English.

    • Yes, rolia is not only focus on English studying, but also for share our experience, feeling in Canada. If you like, you can write your every post in English, just like some other friends do.
      • Rolia is not a good place for someone to practise and improve his English level.
If he want to improve his English, I suggest he 'd better take part in some oral traning classes. Because there are many people they only want to get some informations or only want to make a relaxation here.
        • You cannot attend classes everyday. It is not as convenient as boarding the net.
          • Really? Tell out all the difficulties and problem you met. Maybe I will think out a god idea for you.
            • Here are my difficulties. I would appreciate you very much if you have any good ideas…
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛1. I hate memorizing new words. It is so boring. If one has no interest in doing something, he won’t do it well. Don’t tell me ‘you know how important it is, you should work hard on it.’ I know that, I just hope there are ways I don’t know except hard work.

              2. Memorizing a word doesn’t mean you can use it properly. I find one single word may have many many different meanings and explanations even in some well-known dictionaries. So I feel the best way to learn a word is to see how native speakers use it and try to use it repeatedly and properly. It is quite easy to forget the word if you don’t repeat using it.

              3. I agree with dumpling at one point that one cannot get good sense of English if one just practises it with Chinese. But what if you have no chance to put yourself in an English environment? What if you cannot even express yourself precisely even in front of Chinese? There are different levels. I suddenly realize that maybe this is one of the reasons why many people don’t feel like writing English postings in rolia.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
        • iay, right ar right ar, me speak me speak ar
      • Thank you very much for your advice. I was a little rude.
      • You need to work hard on your English. It should be "Rolia doesn't focus on..., but also for sharing our experiences and feelings in Canada...."
        • No no, it should be this: Rolia is not only focusing on…,but also sharing our experience, feeling in Canada.
        • Thank you for your kindly comments, I will.
      • If you can express yourself clearly, never mind your syntax, otherwise you get the wrong direction. Do you know that the president Bush also makes grammer mistakes?
    • I don't recommend you practise English with Chinese, because we make the same mistakes and you keep reinforcing that. I recommend you communicate with naive English speakers, whom you can find here:
      1. all customer services: such as banks, telephone companies, cable companies, supermarkets and all of the places you have to deal with. Speak with them, they will be patient to listen to you and they will NOT laught at you.

      2. all government agents. You are tax payers and it is their jobs to understand your questions and make you understand them.

      3. say hi to everyone in elevators. Conversation starts there.

      4. Church. More people than you thought will love to talk to you.

      5. Senior people (elderly people). They will be very happy to talk to you.

      6. Taxi drivers

      7. Passagers next to you in a plane

      8. Gas stations. complain how expensive the gas is, you will find people to talk about it.

      9....

      10...

Lots of opportunities if you are in Canada.

Sorry, I cannot type Chinese today. .
      • You can speak to them. But usually they won't point out your mistakes. So you have to have good ears and mimic what you have heard
        • Don't underestimade your immitation capability. Pretty soon you will start using the same "correct" English. It works very well, trust me. But you have to go out and communicate instead of stay at home to "bei4" dictionary.
          • You are definitely right!
      • I think you misunderstood me. I am not in Canada, I am in China and there are no foreigners around me. Thank you for your advice, they may be useful for new immigrants. Please refer to my reply to 冷面人。
    • You are what people called submissive agressive, speaking without a clear point of view, no ends to your means, it's a free forum, go read up some Greek Literature so you know what this place is all about
Julia".
      • HaHa, you get the point! I didn’t mean Rolia should be a forum to learn English. For sure you are one of the key players and you benefit a lot from Rolia. I just wanted to know if Rolia is a place that can help me more.
BTW, if most key players of rolia have the same thoughts as yours, it is a pity of rolia. I don’t think this is the purpose of sailor establishing this forum. Your posting makes me feel like this: Rolia is not only a place for immigrants, but more likely it is for people like you to make fun. It is no wrong for immigrants to have a place to enjoying time together, but do you see the trend that rolia is a little without measure? Do you see how many postings here are nonsense at all? We have too many chatting forums just for fun on the net. If rolia wants to be one of them, I have no word to say, and I apologize for my foolishness and rudeness. If rolia wants to be one of the best forums for immigrants, then think my words more deeply. Remember, improving English is maybe the most important need for immigrants. My words are still very harsh, but please believe my kind intent.
        • I could not agree more
        • I thought the same at first. But don’t be so silly. This is a free forum, people are doing what they like to do. No one has the responsibility to make it something or nothing. Enjoy yourself talking with people in whatever language you like to use:-)
